Cal Ripken by J.W.
My name is Cal Ripken jr., and I’m
here to tell you about my life. I was born in Harve de Grace, Maryland
on August 24, 1960. My brother Billy was also a baseball player and my
dad started working for the Orioles the year my parents were married.
When I was young I wanted to be like my dad because he taught me pretty
much everything I know.
I have had many successes and failures in my career. I was the Orioles
shortstop from 1981-1996, and 3rd basemen from 1997- 2001, when I
retired. I think my most important contributions were helping to bring
the Orioles to a World Series win in 1983. I’m not sure if I made any
ones life better, but I did make a lot of Orioles happy, and I also
made several charity donations after I retired. Some character traits I
have had were my love for a challenge and the fact that I never gave
up. These traits were probably what helped me become “Iron Man” of
baseball. I have had several experiences in more than one area. Since I
retired, I have had success in businesses. I built a minor league
baseball stadium, and I am co-owner of the Aberdeen Iron birds and
Augusta Green jackets, which are both minor league teams. The biggest
problem I had was probably my two slumps in 1982 and in 1990. If I had
one message to give to the students of today it would be never give up,
always try your best, and you can be great too. You may even beat my
record of 2,632 consecutive games.
