Colonial Story

Hannah Johnson- Candlemaker, Potter

Hello I am Hannah Johnson.  I am going to tell you a story that changed my life.  Once there was a huge drought it lasted for about 2 months…
    “Lily!”
    “Yes mother?”
“We have not had any rain for a month now.  Your brother is helping your father run the barrel store, to make money.  But the garden is dying and nobody has bought candles or pots.  So I am closing the store until it begins to rain.”
    “Mother!?,” gasped Lily.
“Indeed it is shocking.  Now will you help me get water from the stream to water the garden?”
    “Indeed, Mother.”
Meanwhile at the barrel store things were not going too well either.  William was arguing with a man about how much to give him for the finest barrel in the store.  William Jr. was running back and forth to get tools for his father.  At home Lily and I were running back and forth fetching water on the screen.  Later it was almost dinner.  Which meant that the men would be coming home soon.
So I said, “Lily, the men will be coming home soon.  Will you help me fetch some dinner?”
     “Indeed,” replied Lily.
The men came home, so we had dinner.  For dinner, we had beef stew, with a few carrots and peas mixed in.  Dinner was very good even though the meat and vegetables were not fresh.  And we were still hungry when there was no stew left.  You see the drought had left us with unfresh food and not enough of it.  After dinner the kids washed up and went to bed.  William Jr. had short brown hair and brown eyes, and resembled his father.  I had black hair and brown eyes like my grandmother.  Lily is truly unique.  She has blonde hair and blue eyes.  She is the first one in the family to have that combination.  After dinner, and after the kids went to bed, William and I talked about the drought.  About a month later I saw rain clouds and it finally began to rain.
