Colonial Story
Charles Smith III- Fisherman, Miller, Militia Captain
Hi, I was born in
England on September 1, 1619. But when I turned 29, there was a
problem. The king didn’t like the Roman Church because they wouldn’t
let him get a divorce. So he made a law. That law was you couldn’t be
Catholic or go to the Catholic Church. But that was a problem for me
because I was Catholic. Oh, another thing, I wasn’t married because my
adopted parents wouldn’t let me have a wife. But I still tried to be
Catholic. I secretly went to church. One of my friends told on me. So I
gave them the money. Then the second thing I did was I tried to move to
Rome. But I couldn’t get a boat. I kept running. Then I borrowed
someone’s horse, and rode. They caught me and I had to pay the fine
again. My final attempt was to talk to the king I don’t think he
understood me because when I said I think you should let there be
Catholics he thought I threatened him and so I went to jail. Then after
five years, my good friend George Calvert thoughtthat there
should be Catholics because he was Catholic to. So what
they did was named the new land Maryland, and you could be Catholic
there to. I moved to Maryland, and I was happy. My problem was solved.
