Cast of Characters for Into the Woods:
Narrator: The storyteller of
this show, the narrator is a fun and
engaging character. The narrator can be male or female and has the most
lines to memorize, but doesn’t sing much.
Baker: A good natured and hard
workingman, the Baker is the heart of
this play. His quest to end the curse on his family teaches him a lot
about himself. This part requires a good actor who can also sing.
Baker’s Wife: She is a strong,
determined, and patient character and
her main role is to help her husband lift the curse. A very important
character, this part requires someone who can act, sing, and has good
comedic timing.
Witch: The witch begins the
show as ugly, old, and sarcastic, but by
the end of the show she has transformed into a beautiful and powerless
woman. This part will require some voice changes, but there is limited
singing. However, the actor must be able to rap.
Cinderella: This version of
Cinderella is beautiful, clumsy, and
awkward. This part requires singing but has very little dialogue.
Jack: (of Jack and the
Beanstalk.) Not the brightest boy, Jack means
well, but frequently makes mistakes. This part requires both singing
and acting.
Little Red Ridinghood: A pushy,
bratty, and spoiled version of this
character, Little Red is a fun and comical little girl. This part
doesn’t require great singing, but it does require singing and
good acting.
Rapunzel: The traditional
version of this character, Rapunzel requires
more singing than acting.
Milky White: Jack’s beloved
cow. This part requires no singing or
talking, but a lot of physical acting. This cow is a very important
part of this show!
Jack’s Mother: Not quite
pretty, Jack’s mother is overworked, frazzled,
overwhelmed, and a bit frustrated with her son’s lack of brains. This
role is mainly an acting role.
Cinderella’s Stepmother:
Selfish, mean, and nasty, Cinderella’s
stepmother enjoys mocking her stepdaughter. This part requires some
singing and limiting speaking.
Florinda and Lucinda:
Cinderella’s spoiled stepsisters, they are
willing to do anything to win the prince. They require some singing and
limited speaking.
Cinderella’s Father: Present in
only one scene, he shows almost no
interest in his daughter. This part requires little singing or acting.
Cinderella’s Mother: The ghost
of Cinderella’s mother is loving and
helpful. She appears in only one scene and is entirely a singing part.
Mysterious Man: A mysterious
character with a big secret. This
character does not sing but does require a good actor.
Wolf: This version of the wolf
is sneak and a little bit creepy. This
is a non-singing role but requires a good actor.
Granny: She is feisty and
fierce. This is a non-singing role, but the
actor should be able to do a “granny” voice.
Rapunzel’s Prince and Cinderella’s
Prince: These two princes are
brothers. Their a little pompous, conceited, and self-absorbed and
their constantly in competition with each other. These roles require
good singers who can carry themselves confidently.
Steward: This is the servant to
Cinderella’s Prince. This part has
limited singing and speaking but requires a confident actor.
