Results of Instruction with ITS

Just two quick examples:
1. Using
Autotutor- an improvement of .5 standard deviation units
(a half letter grade) compared with the control group that studied
using standard text.

2. Using
Atlas- a standard deviation of .9 units from other students
using an ITS that did not use natural language dialogues.

 1. High cost
 2. Time intensive- It takes a hundred hours to create one hour
of  training.

Back to the beginning.

Go to the future of ITS.

Solutions to the Problems

1. The cost will come down as technology increases.
Remember
Moore's Law. The speed of the computer chip will
exponentially double every two years.  So far that law has been
accurate.

2. The creation of authoring tools and shells will decrease the
amount of time needed to create new ITS. Educators will take
a shell already created, add the expert data and student data
available, and the ITS will be ready to go.
